Public Holiday Putrajaya 2026: Federal Territory Day + Thaipusam

Kandungan

Part of our Malaysia public holidays guide, see the federal calendar and all 16 state observances.

Putrajaya, as Malaysia's federal administrative capital and a Federal Territory since 2001, observes all 13 federal gazetted holidays plus Federal Territory Day (1 February) and Thaipusam. Putrajaya hosts most federal government ministries (apart from Parliament and the Prime Minister's Department's KL office), so its public holiday calendar effectively dictates whether federal offices nationwide are open or closed.

Putrajaya Federal Territory-specific holidays

  • Federal Territory Day (1 February 2026, Sun with 2 Feb Mon replacement): commemorates 1 February 1974, the original Federal Territory Day for Kuala Lumpur. Putrajaya was added as a Federal Territory on 1 February 2001. Observed in KL, Labuan, and Putrajaya.
  • Thaipusam (5 February 2026): the Hindu festival commemorating Lord Murugan. Observed in Putrajaya alongside KL, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, and Johor.

Putrajaya as federal administrative hub

Putrajaya is home to most federal government ministries, including the Prime Minister's Department (Perdana Putra), Ministry of Finance (Kementerian Kewangan, Kompleks D), and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. When Putrajaya is on a public holiday, federal offices nationwide that mirror Putrajaya's calendar (e.g., LHDN, JPN, Jabatan Imigresen) typically close as well. Each state has its own LHDN and JPN offices that observe state holidays, so a Putrajaya holiday is not automatically a federal closure in, say, Sabah or Kelantan.

Replacement holiday rule in Putrajaya

Standard Section 8 replacement applies for federal gazetted holidays falling on Sundays. In 2026:

  • Federal Territory Day (1 Feb Sun): replacement on 2 Feb Mon
  • Deepavali (8 Nov Sun): replacement on 9 Nov Mon

Planning around Putrajaya holidays

Putrajaya's federal complexes are off-limits to general visitors on public holidays. However, Taman Botani Putrajaya, Taman Wetland, Putrajaya Lake, and the iconic mosques (Putra Mosque, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque / Iron Mosque) remain open. The Federal Territory Day weekend (1-2 February 2026) hosts the Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in most years. Check ppj.gov.my for the latest schedule. Federal Territory siblings: Kuala Lumpur, Labuan. Bordering state: Selangor.

FAQ: Putrajaya public holidays 2026

Are federal ministries closed on state holidays of surrounding Selangor?

No. Federal ministries in Putrajaya follow Putrajaya's Federal Territory calendar, not Selangor's. Sultan of Selangor's Birthday (11 December) is not a closure day for federal Putrajaya offices.

When did Putrajaya become a Federal Territory?

1 February 2001. Putrajaya was carved out of Selangor specifically to host federal administrative functions, mirroring KL's 1 February 1974 separation from Selangor.

Do banks in Putrajaya close on Federal Territory Day?

Yes. Bank Negara and all commercial banks operating in Federal Territories close on Federal Territory Day. With FT Day on 1 February 2026 falling on Sunday, the 2 February Monday replacement applies.

Does Putrajaya observe state Sultan birthdays?

No. Putrajaya, KL, and Labuan are Federal Territories without a ruling Sultan, so they do not observe state Sultan birthdays. The federal Agong's Birthday (1 June 2026) applies nationally.
