Holiday History

On 7th July 2008, UNESCO conferred World Heritage status to George Town in Penang. This recognition spotlighted George Town’s cultural heritage, colonial influences, and landscape. In response, the Penang government declared 7th July as George Town World Heritage Day, transforming it into a public holiday across the area.

Traditions and Celebrations

Every year, a community-centred festival honours World Heritage Day. The festival revolves around a unique theme each year, with events designed to reflect this theme. For instance, the theme for 2016 was “Mari Main” or “Let’s Play,” and events focused on sports and games from the past.

The festival spans several days and features traditional food, arts and crafts, cultural festivities, and events that underscore the rich history and culture of George Town. It’s a vibrant platform where local communities play an integral role, contributing as presenters, participants, performers, and folklorists, all working tirelessly to keep the history and culture alive. Visitors are given unlimited access to the living traditions of not only George Town but also the surrounding communities.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites

UNESCO identifies, protects, and preserves cultural and natural heritage sites worldwide, which hold immense value for humanity. A location designated as a World Heritage Site implements management plans and reporting systems that detail their conservation efforts. They also develop strategies to safeguard the site during emergencies and strive to preserve local culture and natural heritage through education.
