What’s the story behind Hari Hol Johor?

The tradition of celebrating “Hari Hol” began in 1896, with the death of Sultan Abu Bakar, and has continued for over a century. It is a day for Muslims to pray and ask for forgiveness from Allah so that the sins of the former Sultans may be forgiven, blessing the state of Johor. Muslims also remember the good deeds of the former Sultans on this day.

A special ceremony is held on Hari Hol at the Royal Mausoleum, where more than 40 members of the Johor royal family are buried. The reigning Sultan will lay a bouquet of flowers on the tomb and sprinkle it with fragrances. Most high-ranking government officials also attend the ceremony.
